In this study, healthy adult albino rats weighing approximately 200 gm were used. They were sacrificed by bloodshed and the femur and tibia were obtained, removing all adherent soft tissues. The bones were pulverized as quickly as possible in frozen mortar. Pulverized bone tissues, 500 mg in weight, in 50ml. of 10% EDTA solution were kept in a refrigerator for 24 hours. This was centrifuged and the precipitate was transferred to 5 % EDTA solution. This was again transferred to cellophane tube for electrodialysis.
Electrodialysis was performed for 5 hrs., 15 hrs., 24 hrs., 48 hrs., and 60 hrs respectively. The demineralization was evaluated by determination of total phosphorus content in the bone and the following results were obtained: 41.5% of the phosphorus content of the normal albino rat bone was removed after 5 hours electrodialysis; 53.52 % ´after 15 hrs., 73.47 % after 25 hrs; 83.59 % after 48 hrs.; and 90.71 % after 60 hrs., respectively.
